Building London’s first language map

The London Language Map is led by Sophia Smith Galer, a journalist and author working at the intersection of language, media, and culture. The project is being developed in consultation with Ross Perlin, linguist and co-director of the Endangered Language Alliance in New York, whose work on mapping New York’s languages inspired this initiative.

At this early stage, the project is open, collaborative, and community-driven. We welcome contributions, partnerships, and expertise from anyone interested in London’s linguistic diversity including community organisers, researchers, students, cultural institutions, and everyday speakers who want to help document the city’s living languages.
